Choosing the right wrasse for your tank

Fairy and flasher wrasses are peaceful, fully reef safe and comfortable in tanks of around 50 gallons and up. Six-line, Melanurus and other Halichoeres wrasses are hardy pest hunters that are mostly reef safe but may take small shrimp, and sand-dwelling species need a few inches of fine sand to sleep in. Larger wrasses such as Coris and Thalassoma species typically need 125 gallons or more and eat snails, crabs and shrimp, so they suit FOWLR tanks.

All wrasses appreciate standard reef water of 72-78°F with a specific gravity around 1.023-1.025, plenty of rockwork and, above all, a tight-fitting lid, because wrasses are notorious jumpers. They have fast metabolisms and do best with mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood and quality pellets offered two or three times a day.
