Choosing the right rasboras for your tank

Rasboras are schooling fish, so keep at least eight of the same species; bigger groups look better and make the fish braver. Tiny species such as chili and phoenix rasboras thrive in 5 to 10 gallon nano tanks, harlequin and lambchop rasboras suit 15 to 20 gallons, and larger scissortails want 30 gallons or more. Most rasboras prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at 72 to 80°F, gentle flow and plenty of plants, though they adapt to a range of conditions.

Rasboras are among the most peaceful fish in the hobby and are safe with dwarf shrimp, small tetras, corydoras, otocinclus and dwarf gouramis. Feed micro pellets, crushed flake, baby brine shrimp and daphnia; the smallest species need very fine foods.

Frequently asked questions

Are rasboras good for beginners?

Yes. Harlequin and lambchop rasboras are hardy, peaceful and easy to feed. Chili rasboras are best added to a mature, planted tank.

How many rasboras should I keep together?

At least eight, and ideally ten or more of one species, so they school naturally.

Can rasboras live with shrimp?

Yes. Most rasboras are too small to bother adult dwarf shrimp, which makes them a favorite for shrimp tanks.
