Choosing the right anthias for your tank
Anthias live in harems of one male with several females, so plan on a group rather than a single fish. Most species do best in tanks of 70 gallons or more, with larger, more active species needing well over 100 gallons of open swimming space and strong flow. Water should be stable: 72-78°F, specific gravity around 1.023-1.025 and low nutrients.
Diet is the key to success. Anthias are planktivores with fast metabolisms that typically need small meals two to three times a day, or an automatic feeder, with mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops and small pellets. They are peaceful and fully reef safe, but avoid aggressive tankmates that keep them hiding. Hardy species such as the Lyretail anthias are the best starting point; deep-water species are more delicate.

Frequently asked questions
Are anthias reef safe?
Yes. Anthias ignore corals and ornamental invertebrates, which makes them a favorite for reef aquariums.
How many anthias should I keep together?
Keep one male with several females; a group of three to five is a typical starting point in a tank of 70 gallons or more.
Are anthias good for beginners?
They suit keepers who can feed several times daily and maintain stable water. Lyretail anthias are the hardiest choice for a first group.
