Choosing the right swordtails for your tank

Swordtails are larger and more energetic than platies, so give them 20 to 30 gallons or more with room to swim lengthwise. They prefer moderately hard, slightly alkaline water at 72 to 79°F and good filtration with some current. Males can be pushy with each other, so keep one male with several females or a large group in a big tank. Swordtails are strong jumpers, so a secure lid is a must.

Swordtails are peaceful community fish that mix well with platies, mollies, larger tetras, rainbowfish, corydoras and plecos. They are omnivores that graze algae and readily accept flake, pellets, spirulina, blanched vegetables and frozen foods. As livebearers they produce fry regularly, and dense plants help the young survive.

Frequently asked questions

Are swordtails good for beginners?

Yes. Swordtails are hardy, easy to feed and adaptable, as long as they have a roomy tank and a lid.

Can swordtails breed with platies?

Yes. Swordtails and platies are closely related and will interbreed, so keep them apart if you want to maintain pure strains.

Why does my swordtail keep chasing the others?

Males compete for females and establish a pecking order. More females, more plants and a larger tank reduce the chasing.
