Choosing the right freshwater shrimp for your tank

Dwarf shrimp thrive in tanks of 5 gallons and up; the key requirement is a mature, cycled, copper-free aquarium with stable water. Neocaridina shrimp such as cherry, blue dream and yellow shrimp are hardy and adaptable, comfortable in neutral to moderately hard water at 65 to 78°F. Caridina shrimp such as crystal reds and blue bolts want soft, acidic, cooler water and suit keepers with some experience. Amano and ghost shrimp are tough, larger algae eaters, while bamboo and vampire shrimp are filter feeders that need flow and fine foods.

Provide plants, moss and hiding spots for molting shrimp, and keep them with small peaceful fish such as rasboras and otocinclus, or in a shrimp-only tank for breeding. Feed shrimp pellets, algae wafers and blanched vegetables sparingly.

Frequently asked questions

Are freshwater shrimp good for beginners?

Yes. Cherry, amano and ghost shrimp are hardy and easy in a cycled, copper-free tank.

What fish can live with shrimp?

Small, peaceful fish like chili rasboras, ember tetras, otocinclus and pygmy corydoras. Most fish eat baby shrimp, so breed in a shrimp-only tank.

Why is there an empty shrimp shell in my tank?

That is a molt, a normal sign of growth. Leave it in the tank so the shrimp can eat it for calcium.
