Choosing the right koi for your pond or tank
Koi are large, long-lived fish that can reach two to three feet, so they need a pond rather than an aquarium over the long term. Plan on several hundred gallons per adult koi as a rough guide, with a pond at least three to four feet deep in colder climates, strong biological filtration and good aeration. Koi are cold-hardy and comfortable from the 50s to the low 80s°F; they slow down and stop feeding in cold winter water.
