Fancy Goldfish Varieties Explained: Oranda, Ranchu, and More

Fancy goldfish encompass dozens of selectively bred varieties, each with a distinct body shape that can affect swimming ability and care requirements.

Oranda

Recognizable by its prominent head growth (wen), the oranda is one of the most popular fancy varieties, combining a rounded body with flowing fins.

Ranchu

The ranchu has no dorsal fin and a distinctive curved back profile, prized in Japan as one of the more prestigious fancy varieties.

Bubble Eye

Bubble eyes feature large, fluid-filled sacs beneath each eye and no dorsal fin, requiring extra care to avoid tank decor that could damage these delicate sacs.

Telescope Eye

Named for their protruding eyes, telescope goldfish have reduced vision and do best with calm, non-competitive tankmates that won’t outcompete them for food.
