Koi have been selectively bred for centuries into a wide range of named varieties, each defined by specific color patterns and, in some cases, fin type.
Kohaku
Perhaps the most iconic variety, Kohaku features a white body with red (hi) markings and is often considered the foundation variety from which many others descend.
Showa
Showa combines black, red, and white in a bold, often asymmetrical pattern, distinguished from similar varieties by its black base coloration.
Butterfly Koi
Butterfly koi are defined by their long, flowing fins rather than a specific color pattern, giving them a distinctly different silhouette from traditional short-finned varieties.
Ogon
A solid metallic single-color variety, Ogon is prized for its shimmering, uniform appearance rather than a complex pattern.
