Carbon dioxide is one of the core building blocks of plant photosynthesis, and while many low-tech tanks thrive without supplementation, injected CO2 unlocks a different tier of growth and species options.
When You Don’t Need CO2
Low-light, low-maintenance plants like Java fern and Anubias (see our beginner plants list) grow perfectly well without supplemental CO2, using only what naturally dissolves from the atmosphere.
When CO2 Makes a Difference
Carpeting plants, demanding stem plants, and high-light setups generally need injected CO2 to avoid stunted growth or algae outbreaks caused by an imbalance between light and available nutrients.
Basic Equipment
A pressurized CO2 system with a regulator, solenoid, and diffuser offers the most control, while simpler DIY yeast-based systems provide a lower-cost, lower-precision entry point.
Safety Considerations
Excess CO2 can deplete dissolved oxygen and stress or kill fish, so always pair CO2 injection with good surface agitation, especially overnight when plants stop consuming CO2 but keep off-gassing risk present.
