Choosing the Right Aquarium Substrate

Substrate does more than look good on the bottom of your tank — it affects plant growth, fish behavior, and even water chemistry depending on what you choose.

Gravel

Gravel is a versatile, widely available option that works for most community fish, though it’s less ideal for plants that need to root deeply or fish that like to sift sand.

Sand

Sand suits species that naturally sift substrate, including many gobies and corydoras catfish, and gives a more natural look for many biotope setups.

Aquasoil

Nutrient-rich aquasoil is the preferred choice for serious planted tanks, supplying root-feeding plants directly, though it can affect pH and needs some initial rinsing and settling time.

Substrate and Water Chemistry

Some substrates, like crushed coral, actively raise pH and hardness, useful for African cichlids (see our African cichlid guide) but inappropriate for soft-water species.
