How to Introduce a New Betta to a Community Tank

While bettas have a reputation for aggression, many individuals do well in a peaceful community tank when tankmates and introduction order are chosen carefully.

Add the Betta Last

Introducing a betta to an already-established community, rather than adding other fish to an existing betta’s tank, generally reduces territorial behavior since the betta doesn’t perceive the whole tank as its claimed space.

Choosing Compatible Tankmates

Avoid other bettas, brightly colored or long-finned fish that might be mistaken for a rival, and known fin-nippers. Peaceful bottom dwellers like corydoras catfish generally work well.

Providing Enough Space and Cover

Dense planting and a reasonably sized tank (see our full Betta Fish Care Guide) give a betta room to establish its own territory without constant contact with tankmates.

Monitoring After Introduction

Watch closely for the first few days for signs of persistent aggression, and have a backup plan (like a divider or separate tank) ready in case the specific individual doesn’t adapt well to community life.
