Buying Coral Frags vs. Colonies: What’s the Difference?

When shopping for coral, you’ll typically choose between a small frag (a fragment cut from a larger colony) or a full, established colony — each has its own tradeoffs.

Frags

Frags are more affordable and lower-risk if something goes wrong, making them a great way to start building a diverse collection, especially for demanding species covered in our Acropora care guide.

Colonies

A mature colony offers immediate visual impact and has already proven its resilience through growth, but carries a higher price tag and a bigger loss if it doesn’t adapt well to your tank.

Which Should You Choose?

Beginners often benefit from starting with hardy frags to build experience and confidence before investing in an expensive colony, while experienced reef keepers with a stable, mature tank may go straight for colonies of proven, desirable specimens.
