Freshwater “Shark” Species Explained: Bala, Red Tail, and Rainbow Sharks

Several popular freshwater fish are nicknamed “sharks” for their similar dorsal fin shape and streamlined body, despite having no biological relation to true sharks.

Bala Shark

Bala sharks are active schooling fish that grow surprisingly large — often over a foot — and need a much bigger tank than their attractive juvenile size suggests.

Red Tail Shark

Red tail sharks are territorial toward their own species and similarly shaped fish, generally best kept as a single individual per tank rather than in groups.

Rainbow Shark

Similar in temperament to the red tail shark, rainbow sharks are also best kept singly and appreciate plenty of caves and hiding spots to establish a sense of territory.

Tank Setup Considerations

Most freshwater “sharks” appreciate an elongated tank with open swimming space and rocky hiding spots, along with peaceful, similarly sized tankmates that won’t trigger territorial disputes.
