How to Set Up a Canister Filter

Canister filters offer some of the best filtration capacity available for home aquariums, but their setup involves a few more steps than a simple hang-on-back unit discussed in our filter buying guide.

Media Layering

Most canisters use layered media trays, typically mechanical media (foam or floss) first to trap debris, followed by biological media to house bacteria, and optionally chemical media like carbon.

Priming the System

Canister filters need to be primed with water before running, since they operate as a sealed system rather than relying on gravity like a hang-on-back filter.

Positioning Intake and Output

Position the intake away from substrate to avoid clogging and the spray bar or output to create good surface agitation without directly blasting delicate fish.

Maintenance

Rinse mechanical media in removed tank water regularly, but avoid over-cleaning biological media, which houses the beneficial bacteria colony discussed in our cycling guide.
