How to Drip Acclimate Coral Frags

Introducing a new coral frag to your tank deserves the same care as acclimating a new fish, discussed in our fish acclimation guide, if not more.

Temperature First

Float the sealed bag for 15-20 minutes to equalize temperature before opening, just as you would with a new fish.

Drip Acclimation

Use airline tubing to slowly drip your tank water into a container holding the frag and its shipping water over 20-30 minutes, gradually adjusting it to your tank’s specific salinity and chemistry.

Dip Before Adding (Optional)

Many reef keepers use a coral dip to help remove pests or parasites that may have hitchhiked in on the frag before introducing it to the display tank.

Placement and Lighting

Place new frags in a lower-light area initially and gradually move them toward their permanent, appropriately lit position over one to two weeks to avoid light shock.

Monitor Closely

Watch for signs of stress like excessive mucus production or tissue recession during the first week, adjusting placement or flow if needed.
