Recognizing Ammonia Poisoning

Immediate Steps
Perform an immediate large partial water change (25-50%) with properly conditioned, temperature-matched water to dilute ammonia quickly.
Stop Feeding Temporarily
Halt feeding for a day or two to reduce additional waste production while the situation stabilizes.
Use an Ammonia Detoxifier
A water conditioner formulated to detoxify ammonia can provide a temporary buffer while your beneficial bacteria colony catches up or re-establishes.
Identify the Root Cause
Common triggers include a new, uncycled tank, overfeeding, overstocking, or a recent filter media clean using tap water that killed the bacteria colony — address the specific cause to prevent recurrence.
