What Creates the Blackwater Look

Driftwood, dried leaf litter (such as Indian almond leaves), and other botanicals release tannins that stain the water a characteristic amber-brown color while also lowering pH slightly.

Water Chemistry Benefits

Potential Downsides

Tannins can make it harder to visually judge water clarity, and some leaf litter needs periodic replacement as it breaks down, adding a small ongoing maintenance task.
