Keeping Aquatic Amphibians: An Introduction

Aquatic amphibians occupy an interesting niche between fish and traditional herptile pets, and species like axolotls have grown enormously popular in recent years.

Temperature Needs

Most aquatic amphibians prefer significantly cooler water than typical tropical fish, often in the 60-68°F range, meaning a chiller may be necessary in warmer climates rather than a standard heater setup.

Tankmates

Many aquatic amphibians do best alone or with a small number of their own species, since fish tankmates can nip at their delicate external gills or be mistaken for food.

Water Quality

Amphibians are generally sensitive to ammonia and nitrite, so a fully cycled tank (see How to Cycle a New Aquarium) is essential before introducing them.

Diet

Most aquatic amphibians are carnivorous, thriving on a diet of live or frozen bloodworms, earthworms, and specialized pellets.
