A 20-gallon tank hits a sweet spot for many beginners: large enough for real stocking variety, small enough to remain affordable and manageable.

Schooling Fish

A group of six to eight rasboras or danios fills the middle water column with active, peaceful movement.

Bottom Dwellers

A group of corydoras catfish rounds out the tank, cleaning up leftover food along the substrate.

A single betta or a small group of dwarf gourami adds color and personality without overwhelming the bioload.

A handful of nerite snails or cherry shrimp help keep algae and detritus in check.

Always confirm your tank is fully cycled first (see How to Cycle a New Aquarium), and add fish gradually in small groups rather than all at once.
