Damsels & Chromis Care Guide

Damsels and chromis are among the hardiest saltwater fish available, often used to safely cycle a new marine tank before more delicate species are added — though this practice is increasingly debated on animal welfare grounds since it exposes early fish to unstable water quality.

Hardiness

Damsels tolerate a wider range of temperature and water quality swings than most marine fish, which is exactly why they’ve historically been recommended for new tank owners.

Temperament

Many damsel species are territorial and can become quite assertive as they mature, sometimes bullying more peaceful, expensive fish added later. Chromis, by contrast, are generally more peaceful and better suited to community reef tanks.

Diet

Both damsels and chromis accept a wide range of prepared foods without difficulty.

A Better Approach to Cycling

Rather than using livestock to cycle a tank, consider a fishless cycling approach with live rock, discussed in our aquarium cycling guide, before adding any fish at all.
