Gravel vacuuming combines two maintenance tasks into one: removing debris from the substrate while performing your regular water change.

How It Works

A gravel vacuum uses a siphon to draw water (and debris) up through the substrate and out of the tank, which you then replace with fresh, conditioned water as part of your routine water change.

Technique

Push the vacuum tube gently into the substrate at a slight angle, allowing gravel to churn briefly in the tube while debris is carried away, then move to the next section systematically across the tank.

Working Around Plants and Decor

Be gentle near live plant roots and delicate decor, using a lighter touch or a smaller-diameter vacuum attachment designed for planted tanks.

How Often to Vacuum

Vacuuming during each regular water change is sufficient for most tanks, though heavily stocked tanks may benefit from more frequent attention to problem areas like under decor.
