Setting Up a Betta Sorority Tank

While male bettas can’t be housed together, a “sorority” of female bettas can coexist in a properly set up tank, offering a way to enjoy multiple bettas’ personalities at once.

Group Size Matters

A group of at least five females is generally recommended, since smaller groups tend to concentrate aggression on one or two individuals rather than distributing it across the group.

Tank Size

A larger tank than a single betta needs — generally 20 gallons or more — gives sorority members room to establish territory and retreat from squabbles.

Providing Cover

Dense planting and multiple visual barriers help break sightlines and give lower-ranking females places to hide from more dominant tankmates.

Introducing the Group

Add all females at roughly the same time rather than introducing them one at a time, which tends to concentrate aggression on the newest arrival.

Monitoring for Problems

Some fin damage and chasing is normal as a hierarchy establishes, but persistent, one-sided bullying or a consistently hiding fish are signs the setup needs adjustment. See our full Betta Fish Care Guide for baseline care.
