Guppy vs. Molly vs. Platy vs. Swordtail: Comparing Livebearers

Guppies, mollies, platies, and swordtails are closely related livebearers that share easy care and prolific breeding, but each brings something slightly different to a community tank.

Guppies

The smallest and most colorful of the four, guppies (see our guppy breeding guide) are ideal for smaller tanks and nano setups.

Mollies

Larger and more tolerant of brackish conditions, mollies (see our molly care guide) suit slightly bigger tanks and benefit from some vegetable matter in their diet.

Platies

Compact and extremely hardy, platies (see our platy care guide) are often recommended as one of the easiest livebearers for absolute beginners.

Swordtails
