While most fishkeeping advice focuses on keeping water warm enough, summer heat waves can push tanks dangerously high, especially in rooms without air conditioning.
Why Overheating Is Dangerous
Warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen right when fish metabolism (and oxygen demand) increases, a combination that can quickly become life-threatening for sensitive species.
Cooling Strategies
Turn off unnecessary heat-producing equipment like lights during the hottest part of the day, increase surface agitation to boost oxygen exchange (see our air pump guide), and consider a fan blowing across the water’s surface to encourage evaporative cooling.
Aquarium Chillers
For reef tanks or species requiring cooler water, a dedicated aquarium chiller offers the most reliable protection during sustained heat waves.
Watch for Signs of Stress
Fish gasping at the surface or unusually lethargic behavior can indicate overheating or oxygen depletion — act quickly to cool the tank and increase aeration if you notice these signs.
