UV Sterilizers: Do You Need One?

UV sterilizers pass water past a UV-C bulb, damaging the DNA of free-floating algae, bacteria, and some parasites as they pass through — a useful supplemental tool in the right situation.

Controlling Green Water

UV sterilizers are highly effective at clearing green water caused by free-floating algae, often succeeding where filtration alone struggles.

Pathogen Control

UV can help reduce free-swimming stages of certain parasites and pathogens, offering a supportive role during disease outbreaks like those covered in our common fish disease guide, though it doesn’t replace proper quarantine and treatment.

What UV Doesn’t Do

UV only affects organisms passing directly through the unit — it won’t cure parasites already attached to fish, and it doesn’t address the underlying water quality issues that often cause outbreaks in the first place.

Is It Worth Adding?

Ponds and tanks prone to green water, or systems with a history of disease, benefit most from a UV sterilizer. A well-maintained, appropriately stocked tank may not need one at all.
