The Ultimate Aquarium Maintenance Checklist

Planted freshwater aquarium with fish

A predictable maintenance routine prevents most common aquarium problems before they start. Here’s a simple breakdown by frequency.

Daily

Observe fish behavior and appetite, check that equipment (filter, heater, lights) is running normally, and remove any obviously uneaten food.

Weekly

Test water parameters (see Understanding Aquarium Water Parameters), perform a 10-25% water change, and wipe algae from the glass.

Monthly

Rinse filter media in removed tank water (never tap water, which kills beneficial bacteria), trim overgrown plants, and inspect equipment like heaters and pump impellers for wear.

Quarterly or As-Needed

Deep clean substrate with a gravel vacuum, check and replace worn tubing or aging equipment, and reassess stocking levels as fish grow.

Keeping a Log

A simple written or digital log of test results and maintenance dates makes it much easier to spot developing trends before they become emergencies.
