How to Breed Betta Fish

Breeding betta fish is a rewarding but involved project, quite different from the casual breeding of livebearers like guppies.

Conditioning the Pair

Before introducing a pair, condition both fish with high-protein live or frozen foods for one to two weeks to bring them into breeding readiness.

The Bubble Nest

Male bettas build a floating bubble nest at the water’s surface, a sign they’re ready to spawn. Introduce the female only once the nest is established, and watch closely, since initial aggression is normal but should not become excessive.

Spawning and Egg Care

After spawning, the male collects eggs in his mouth and places them in the bubble nest, then guards them alone — remove the female at this point, since the male may become aggressive toward her.

Raising Fry

Fry are extremely small and need infusoria or specialized fry food initially, graduating to baby brine shrimp as they grow. Frequent small water changes are essential, since fry are highly sensitive to poor water quality.
