Aquarium Power Outage Survival Guide

A power outage stops your filter, heater, and air pump all at once, but most tanks can weather a short outage without major harm if you respond calmly.

Oxygen First

Without filtration or aeration, dissolved oxygen can drop, especially in warm, heavily stocked tanks. A battery-powered air pump is a cheap, valuable backup to keep on hand.

Temperature

Insulate the tank with towels or blankets to slow heat loss during a cold-weather outage, since a heater failure is often more urgent than a lack of filtration for tropical species.

Manual Water Movement

Periodically stirring the water surface by hand (gently, with a clean container) can help maintain oxygen exchange during a longer outage without power.
